ReCip™, Reciprocating Water Technology Currently Under Construction at 270-unit Residential Condominium Property (A Place At The Beach III) on Atlantic Beach, NC.

A ReCip™ ( patented) innovative wastewater treatment technology developed at TVA's (Tennessee Valley Authority) Environmental Research Center in Muscle Shoals, AL is presently under construction at a beach-front condominium property in Atlantic Beach, NC. The 60,000 gallon per day treatment system is replacing an aging (and failing) Sequential Batch Reactor (SBR) which has been out of compliance with NCDENR regulations, primarily with regards to nitrate loading limits. Rather than replace, or attempt an upgrade to the aging package plant, the Home Owner's Association Board decided to install ReCip™, a "low-tech, low-touch", and lower cost operation & maintenance alternative, using reciprocating aggregate-filled cells to treat the domestic waste stream. Besides the simpler and less expensive operational characteristics of the ReCip™ system, the ability to shutdown half of the system during off-season occupancy of the property was a contributing advantage over other conventional treatment methods. This feature allows for even less oversight and operations (electricity) expense during lower occupancy periods. Another "plus" for the property is the virtual elimination of frequent facility refurbishing (rust, sandblasting, painting, etc.) which plaques any steel/metal structures located in coastal areas. As one Board member stated, "down here, a 2x4 will rust!". The ReCip™ cells are pre-cast or poured-in-place concrete, with Aluminum steps & railings. Very little if any facility maintenance is expected at the site.
